“Ida”, “Ludwig” or “Paula” – these names have shaped the official German spelling table for decades. Now it must be reformed, also as a gesture to Jewish life in Germany. Because the National Socialists removed many Jewish names from the original version of the board.
As part of the reform, the Weimar period version will be temporarily reused from next autumn. According to information from the Funke media group, this was decided by the working committee of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN).
The decision is symbolic: in 1934 the National Socialists erased all Jewish names from the spelling table of the time. For example, “‘D’ as David” became “Dora” and “Nathan” became “North Pole.” Although there was a revision in 1950, most of the changes were not reversed.
The campaign was started by the Baden-Württemberg antisemitism commissioner Michael Blume. He had written a letter to DIN and had come out in favor of a temporary return to the old spelling table. “My concern is that the National Socialists’ table is not just busy,” Blume said. “It is a good sign for the year in which we are celebrating 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany to make it clear what the table was originally like.”
A reform proposal for a new standardized spelling table will be presented next fall, for which city names are likely to be used primarily. At the same time, the Weimar table will be used again, until the final reform comes into force in the third quarter of 2022.
