On Tuesday afternoon, December 1, 2020, the first call came to the police at 1:47 p.m. A car driver was reported running through the pedestrian zone of Trier and driving towards people.
When the driver of the truck was arrested by police at 1:51 pm, he killed four people, injured 15 others, some of them life-threatening, and traumatized large numbers. During the night, another victim died from his serious injuries.
The driver is a 51-year-old German citizen who was born in Trier and lives in the Trier-Saarburg district.
On his journey through part of the pedestrian area of Trier, starting at the Basilica of Constantin, passing through Brotstrasse, Hauptmarkt, Simeonstrasse to Porta Nigra, he left dead, injured and a field of rubble at a distance of about 800 meters. After turning into Christophstrasse and driving another 100 meters, he stopped his vehicle briefly and was arrested here by the police who immediately arrived with great resistance.
He is currently being questioned about the crime, which the Trier prosecutor has classified as multiple homicide, attempted murder and dangerous bodily injury.
All the murdered victims were people from Trier who were walking through the pedestrian area of Trier, which was decorated for Christmas.
A 45-year-old man and his nine-and-a-half-week-old daughter were murdered (we initially incorrectly state an age of nine months). The girl’s wife and mother and another one-and-a-half-year-old son in the family were injured and admitted to a hospital in Trier.
The other dead are women of 25, 52 and 73 years old.
More than 750 police, emergency and rescue services from across the Trier region were able to secure and cordon off the crime scene very quickly and care for the victims.
The behavior of many passers-by, who had already treated the wounded when the emergency services arrived and provided first aid, was exemplary.
The motive for the 51-year-old suspect has yet to be clarified. According to the current status of the investigation, the police have no evidence of political or religious motives. There was also no other crime scene or evidence of accomplices or accomplices.
Investigations at the crime scene, which extends for several 100 meters, have been concluded for the time being, the pedestrian zone has been cleared and released again. The investigation into the background to the crime is ongoing and will take some time.
At 7:00 pm, the heads of the public prosecutor’s office, the police and the city of Trier, together with the Minister of the Interior of Rhineland-Palatinate, informed the media at a press conference.
