A car struck several people in the pedestrian area of Trier and, according to initial findings, fatally wounded at least two of them. Police initially spoke of two deaths and then several deaths. The driver was arrested, he said on Twitter.
He was a German from the Trier-Saarburg district, Trier Police Headquarters spokesman Karl-Peter Jochem said Tuesday. The man drove through a pedestrian zone in a van and apparently hit people “at random.” When he was arrested, he resisted. The car was insured.
The background to the incident is still unclear. Videos posted on Twitter show damaged shops in the pedestrian zone and one injured man lying on the ground, as well as an ambulance.
The “Triersche Volksfreund” quoted a witness who spoke of a Range Rover SUV that had entered the area. People have flown through the air. A helicopter flew over the area.
Trier Mayor talks about an uproar
Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said it was an uproar. He spoke of a “horror picture” presented to him in the pedestrian zone. All rescuers from across the region are on their way.
A police spokesman spoke of several injured. Once the driver has been arrested, there is no longer any danger to the population. The entire city center was cordoned off, the slopes were secured. This can take several hours.

Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer expressed her horror. Interior Minister Roger Lewentz drove from Mainz to the scene of the incident near Porta Nigra. Dreyer is also expected there in the afternoon.
The federal government also reacted with concern. “What happened in Trier is shocking,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Twitter. “The thought is with the families of the victims, with the many injured and with all those who are on duty at this time to care for those affected.”
