In Cloppenburg, farmers have been blocking a central warehouse of the Lidl discount store with their tractors since Sunday night. Among other things, they protest against low prices.
According to the Cloppenburg police, around 100 farmers were still there with their tractors on Monday afternoon. One of his spokesmen said that the action should continue indefinitely. The farmers are demanding a meeting with Lidl’s management because they think they are getting very little from the sale price of their products.
Farmers avoid police barriers
The police could not stop the farmers from protesting.
On occasion, around 500 farmers participated in the spontaneous demonstration. They met for the first time on Sunday evening at Bundesstrasse 72. When the police tried to arrest them, they circumvented the barriers and stopped at the entrance and exit of the central warehouse.
More demonstrations in Emstek, Westerkappeln and Sulingen
Other farmers gathered in front of a farm in Emstek (Cloppenburg district) and in front of a Lidl warehouse in Westerkappeln (North Rhine-Westphalia) near Osnabrück. On Monday lunchtime, the people of Mittelweser demonstrated in Sulingen with 150 tugs against the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN). Farmers accuse the NLWKN that its nitrate measurement points led to unfair fertilization bans for farmers.
Farmers see their existence threatened
The farmers’ protest is directed against the prices of the large supermarket chains. Agriculture in Germany is being hit against the wall, a spokesman said. Farmers already had one on Friday Edeka central warehouse blocked in the Ammerland district. The reason was cheap dairy deals. Farmers have long demanded more money for milk and meat.
