reThe assassins were knowledgeable and well-trained. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh returned on Friday afternoon with his wife and bodyguards from a weekend vacation on the Caspian Sea. Fifty kilometers east of Tehran, the assassins first detonated a bomb in Damawand province; Iranian media spoke of twelve people involved. It destroyed the armored vehicle of the head of the military part of Iran’s nuclear program. Before the bodyguards of the escort vehicle could react, the attackers jumped out of a car, killed Fakhrizadeh and drove off without being recognized.

The attack must scare the leaders of Tehran. Because if it is possible on the soil of the Islamic Republic to eliminate one of the most important men in the Iranian army, the attackers on the ground must not only have a good network. The attack also revealed surprising loopholes in the security apparatus.
