It is the second miracle in the Formula 1 race in Bahrain: Frenchman Grosjean not only emerges from the burning wreckage of his car after almost half a minute. In the evening, his racing team announced that the 34-year-old probably only burned the back of his hand.

French Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean survived his horrific accident at the Bahrain Grand Prix without interruption. The Haas Racing Team announced. The 34-year-old “will spend the night in the hospital to treat the burns on the back of both hands” that he suffered in his accident in the first round. Both backs of the hands are bandaged. He will be able to say more on Monday when the associations are eliminated, said team boss Günter Steiner.

Grosjean, his hands heavily bandaged, sent greetings from his hospital bed that night and thanked everyone who had texted him. “I was not in favor of the Halo a few years ago, but it is the best of Formula One,” he said. Halo is the ring-shaped titanium mount that extends over the driver’s head in the cab.

The Grosjean car, which started from position 19, was thrown against a railing at about 250 kilometers per hour after coming into contact with the AlphaTauri of Russian Daniil Kwjat. Upon impact, the car broke in two and immediately caught fire. The chassis got stuck in the railing and a front wheel rolled into the desert landscape of Sakhir.

Grosjean, who was exposed to heat for 27 seconds, was able to free himself from the wreck. Thanks to the fireproof clothing and monocoque, he was relatively well protected and came away with relatively minor injuries and a lot of horror. The race was stopped immediately and restarted an hour later. In the end, world champion Lewis Hamilton won again.

Steiner did not want to speak specifically about the plan to use a replacement driver at Sakhir’s upcoming Grand Prix. Most importantly, Grosjean is doing well. Plan B is to get the French back when he’s okay.
