Schalke’s streak continues without a trio: for the 25th time in a row, the Gelsenkirchen side failed to win in the Bundesliga. In the 1: 4 (1: 2) match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Schalke held at least half the game. Meanwhile, Benito Raman had equaled Gladbach’s lead by Florian Neuhaus (15th minute) (20). Oscar Wendt (36th), Marcus Thuram (52nd) and Hannes Wolf (80th) scored the other goals for the hosts.

The Gladbachers were a bit exhausted recently. In the last two Bundesliga games he did not win. Due to the country and the Champions League matches, many professionals have long played at least twice a week.

While Borussia have been mostly uncertain in the finals in recent weeks, they started against Schalke in the first half. Schalke held up well in the first round and was dangerous at first. First through the completion of 19-year-old Bundesliga rookie Matthew Hoppe (ninth), then through a header from Steven Skrzybski (13th).

Schalke to perfection on the first goal

What followed was Schalke this season to perfection: Alassane Pléa entered the penalty area from the left and missed against the newly strong Schalke goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow. On the side of Neuhaus from the edge of the penalty area, Rönnow and Ozan Kabak, Matija Nastasic and Omar Mascarell sent three defenders running towards the line to block. All failed, most recently Mascarell, whose legs slid the ball over the line (15th).

Schalke’s response was then the perfect counterpart: After winning the ball in all sixteen opponents, Mark Uth was delayed only to play a strong lob over the remaining Gladbach defense. Raman took the ball directly and put it in the corner (20th). Schalke had rarely seen them play with such freedom in recent months, only minutes later Uth launched a free kick against the outside post (27).

Defensive problems remained

Only defensive problems remained. After a combination through Marcus Thuram and Neuhaus, Wendt pushed freely off Rönnow (36 °). The crossbar avoided a major deficit with a header from Thuram (39th).

In the second half, Patrick Herrmann carefully played a free kick from a distance. The Gladbacher sucked the ball up to Matthias Ginter, who started next to the wall and placed it in the back room. Rönnow saved Pléa’s next shot, but was unable to hit Thuram’s margin (51.). Schalke’s loss could have been even bigger in the second round. Gladbach was nervous about his chances, only substitute Wolf scored (80th).

Gladbach jumps to seventh place thanks to home win. Schalke is last with three points.
