The state of Lower Saxony is tightening measures in schools in the so-called hotspots of the crown. Education Minister Grant Hendrik Tonne (SPD) today presented a “School Hotspot Strategy”.
It’s about how schools and infection protection can be reconciled in regions with particularly high numbers of corona cases. Existing measures will be expanded here. Add measures to increase protection against infection, Tonne said at a news conference.
Hotspots: Mandatory mask also for elementary students
Therefore, the measures apply to schools in a district where the seven-day incidence exceeds 200. Beginning in the seventh year, classes at the affected access points should automatically switch to the changing pattern (Scenario B). Furthermore, a mask requirement should also apply to elementary students in class. The measures should be maintained until the affected district falls below an incidence value of 200 for three days in a row, and no new corona infections occur at the respective school, according to Tonne.
There are currently three counties affected
According to the minister, the Cloppenburg, Osnabrück and Vechta districts currently exceed the incidence value of 200. In view of the persistently high crown numbers, the Cloppenburg district had previously announced that students would continue to alternate between home and home in shared classes. until the Christmas holidays. be taught in school (“scenario B”). The incidence value of seven days was the last in more than 270.

Mask requirement possible in class
At the federal-state summit on Wednesday, Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) agreed to extend the so-called partial lockdown until December 20. Among other things, they decided that there should be a mask requirement in school lessons. This should take effect from grade 7 when the seven-day incidence exceeds 50. Lower Saxony had already introduced this measure in early November; it is applied in risk areas from the fifth grade.
Faster quarantine
In the case of corona cases in schools, according to the resolution, the procedure should be uniform in the future: infected people and all classmates must be immediately quarantined for five days. Then a quick test is planned. If negative, students can return to school. The obligation of quarantine should not apply to teachers.
Previous Christmas holidays
The federal and state governments also agreed to advance the Christmas holidays: they begin on December 19. In Lower Saxony, Tuesday December 22 should be the last day of school this year. Education Minister Tonne had previously spoken out against advancing the Christmas holidays, but changed this position in view of the new framework conditions. .
