The official federal government corona warning app is available for download in an enhanced version. According to a blog post from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the current version 1.7 was released Wednesday afternoon on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. With the update, risk checking can now be performed multiple times a day. So far, the update has only been done once a day. Additionally, users who have tested positively receive a reminder with the current version if they have not yet shared their test result.

The warning app launched by (RKI) in June can measure whether cell phone users have come within two meters for a longer period of time. If a user has tested positive and shared it in the app, let other users know that they have been around an infected person.

The app, which was developed and operated by the two German tech companies SAP and Deutsche Telekom on behalf of RKI, has been downloaded more than 22 million times on suitable smartphones. The number of active users is slightly below this value as some users have either uninstalled the application again or have permanently disabled the Bluetooth radio required for the application to work. In Germany, an estimated 53 million smartphones are actively used on which the application could be run.

With the current version 1.7, users can now be informed more quickly about potential risks. According to the RKI, the verification is carried out several times a day automatically. However, the prerequisite for this is that the smartphone is connected to a WLAN. The standard daily risk check will continue to be performed once a day independent of a WLAN, that is, via the cellular network if necessary.

Additionally, two hours after opening a positive test result in the app, users are reminded to share it, if they haven’t already. After another four hours, a second reminder occurs if users have not yet shared the test result.

With one click on the reminder, users go directly to the function to share their results. The creators of the app are reacting to the fact that not all the app users who tested positive have entered the result in the app and thus triggered the digital warning string.

Please set the clock

In addition, several bugs have been corrected and a function has been introduced that is activated if the time on the smartphone is not set correctly. Because for risk checking it is absolutely necessary that the time set on the mobile phone corresponds to the real time. If the software detects a discrepancy here, it will inform the user of it.

On Android devices, you can set the clock automatically by going to Settings below System / date and time the menu item Use network time activated. You can find the menu item on iPhones Set automatically at Settings below General / Date and time.

The version released Wednesday is the first of a total of four planned updates to the Corona warning app for the end of 2020. Among other things, a contact journal will be introduced in the other updates, in which users can enter with whom is it so. when did you meet. In addition, information on the development of the pandemic will be integrated into the application.
