The partial lockdown will last until December 20 in view of the persistently high number of new corona infections in Rhineland-Palatinate. That’s what Prime Minister Dreyer said after the Corona summit.

The population of Rhineland-Palatinate will face severe restrictions in December, in some cases even tighter. Hotels, restaurants, as well as leisure and cultural facilities will initially remain closed until December 20, Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) said after federal-state consultations with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). The goal is to significantly reduce the high number of new corona infections.

However, the federal and state governments assumed that due to the high level of infection, heavy restrictions would be necessary until early January, especially in the restaurant and hotel sectors. “We will do another review and evaluation before Christmas,” Dreyer announced. For businesses that must be closed in December, the federal government wants to provide more billions in aid.

“Parties are taboo”

Dreyer said the following general rule applies through January: “Holidays are taboo.” Beginning December 1, 2020, meetings will be limited to a maximum of five people from a total of two households during the winter months. There are exceptions for Christmas and New Years Eve with family and friends.

For the period from December 23, 2020 to January 1, 2021 at the latest, meetings with close family members or friends are possible up to a maximum of ten people in total. Your children up to 14 years old do not count. Dreyer had campaigned to ease contact restrictions during the holidays before consultations.

“We always knew: this is a marathon and not a sprint.”

During the Christmas holidays, the principle applies: #wirbleibenzuhause. Dreyer appealed to people not to lose confidence. “We always knew: this is a marathon and not a sprint. We have reached our goals from the first stage. We must not give up before the home straight.”

No firecrackers in public places

Furthermore, the use of firecrackers in public places and busy streets in Rhineland-Palatinate will be prohibited. It’s about avoiding larger groups in the corona pandemic. Public fireworks would be prohibited. In principle, the state government recommends avoiding New Year’s fireworks at the turn of the year.

More protection for nursing homes

Dreyer also announced that he will strengthen the protection of people in nursing homes and nursing homes in Rhineland-Palatinate. The visit should be limited to one person or a maximum of two people in a household per day. Visitors would have to wear an FFP2 mask and home-based workers would be screened weekly.

The mask requirement is maintained in schools in Rhineland-Palatinate

Schools were also a theme at the Corona summit with the Chancellor. Fortunately, schools are not a source of infection, Dreyer said. “We want to keep teaching in place for as long as possible, while monitoring infections and protecting health.”

Therefore, Rhineland-Palatinate adheres to the obligation to wear a mouth and nose guard in secondary schools. At special infection hotspots above an incidence of 200 new infections per 100,000 population per week, other measures will be discussed next week for older students beginning in the eighth grade. Schools in the cities of Speyer and Mainz are currently affected. The Ministry of Education will soon provide schools with details of the new regulations.
