Lugano is considered a hotspot for Islamism in Switzerland. A stabbing in a city department store causes the federal prosecutor to sit up and take notice. There is the possibility of a terrorist motive in the attack.
In Switzerland, after a knife stabbing in a department store in the city of Lugano with two wounded, they say they are investigating the suspicion of an attack with Islamist motivation. “On November 24, 2020, there was an alleged terrorist attack against several people in a department store in Lugano,” said the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.
According to police, shortly before 2 pm, a 28-year-old Swiss woman living in the canton city of Ticino assaulted two women in a department store and wounded one with a knife. One of the two attacked was seriously injured, but not seriously, the other slightly. The attacker was arrested. According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, criminal proceedings are being opened against them, among other things, for suspicions of intentional homicide, serious bodily injury and violation of the ban on extremist groups Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS).
Switzerland has so far escaped serious Islamist-motivated attacks such as those in Vienna, Paris and Nice, in which a total of eight people were killed. However, the country has identified hundreds of residents who are seen as a threat, as well as militants who have traveled to war zones. Two men arrested in Winterthur in connection with the Vienna attack visited the killer in July.
The city, located about 25 kilometers northeast of Zurich, is considered a focal point of Islamism in Switzerland. In September, a man referred to by the media as the “Emir of Winterthur” and a prominent Islamist militant in Switzerland was sentenced to 50 months in prison for his ties to the Islamic State.
