President-elect Joe Biden establishes his cabinet. Biden wanted to name Antony Blinken as his choice for foreign minister on Tuesday. This is reported by the New York Times and the Bloomberg news agency, citing inside information. A Biden confidant told Reuters that Blinken was Biden’s “most likely choice” for the job.
Foreign policy advisor during the election campaign
Biden’s transition team declined to comment. However, team members had already confirmed on Sunday that Biden would appoint his first cabinet member on Tuesday. Blinken herself did not respond to a request for comment.
Blinken advised Biden on foreign policy issues during his election campaign against US President Donald Trump. From 2013 to 2015 he was Deputy National Security Advisor to then President of the United States, Barack Obama, and from 2015 to 2017 he was Under Secretary of State John Kerry.
Biden wants to realign his country’s foreign policy: he promised to cement relations with allies around the world and lead the United States back to international agreements. For example, it has announced a return to the Paris climate protection agreement. Unlike current President Donald Trump, he also wants to continue working with the World Health Organization (WHO).
Tight conditions in the Senate
It can be assumed that the president-elect will first announce the appointment of one or more of the most important portfolios. During the election campaign, Biden had promised: “My government will look like America.” So diversity should be the motto. Biden will be sworn in as the new president on January 20.
Biden’s candidates for ministerial positions have yet to be approved by the Senate. Republicans currently have a small majority there. Majority indices could change due to two runoff elections in the state of Georgia in early January. Biden was named the winner of the November 3 presidential election by the US media, but Republican President Trump refuses to admit defeat.
