Thiem is subject to Medvedev despite leading in the final of the ATP Finals

If there was any doubt that the two finalists Thiem and Medvedev are currently the best players on the tour, the duo cleared them in the semi-finals at the latest. The Austrian beat world number one Novak Djokovic, while the Russian beat world number two with Rafael Nadal.

Consequently, the final was contested. Thiem put up the first puncture, breaking the game to 3-2 in Game 5.

The world number three was lucky with the fixed ball, which he reserved for himself on the net scooter.

Medvedev fought tenaciously for his first break, but Thiem withstood the enormous pressure of the world number four thanks to his excellent serve.

However, he could not play this advantage in the tiebreaker. After Thiem took a 2-0 lead, Medvedev burned a fireworks display with seven points in a row – compensation set!

Soon after, in the third set, with a score of 1: 1 and a 40: 0 lead, Medvedev had a great chance of breaking the Austrian’s service game.

He didn’t use any of his three break balls.

Two games later, the 24-year-old picked it up and took a 3-2 lead with his first break of the match. It was the cornerstone to winning the title.

Thiem could no longer take the service away from the Russian. After two hours and 42 minutes, Medvedev finally used his first match point.

“Daniil’s victory is deserved, he played a great November with the Paris-Bercy title and now here in London,” Thiem said as a fair underdog.
