Due to many corona cases, two schools in Hamburg have to close temporarily. School authorities have now ordered that.

The Veddel school and the small branch of the school in Billbrookdeich will become distance learning. According to the authorities, there are indications in both facilities that dozens of schoolchildren and teachers are infected with the corona virus. School authorities have not yet been able to give an exact number. At the Veddel school, 550 children, youth and teachers have been serially tested. The result: 65 new infections were discovered, a total of almost 100 students and teachers were infected in the Veddel. A series of tests was also carried out in the Billbrookdeich school section with about 100 students.

Nothing is known about the causes of the possible infections, a spokesman for the authorities said Friday. The spread of infections in almost all grade levels suggests that many children have probably already come to school with an infection.

Ida Ehre school may reopen

In Eimsbüttel, on the other hand, the Ida Ehre school will reopen for classes from Monday. It was closed for almost two weeks due to many corona cases. Around 1,200 schoolchildren and teachers it had been tested for Corona earlier this month. A total of 55 cases were found in the series test, of 25 school classes. They were then completely quarantined by the health department. Even before that, 22 coronavirus infections had been known at the district school in Harvestehude.

From Monday there will be classes again at Ida Ehre Schule, after a break of almost two weeks.

In front of the Ida Ehre school there were protests by teachers on Friday morning. Teachers organized in the GEW education union demanded that their school not return to full face-to-face teaching. A school also has a social responsibility, distance rules must be respected. That was nearly impossible in the school building, due to narrow hallways and too many students, a participant at the rally said. The teachers asked that the classes be cut in half.

Rules changed at Ida Ehre school

With classes starting on Monday, there will actually be some changes at Ida Ehre Schule, mainly for separate groups of students. The start and end of school and breaks are staggered. Physical education should be relocated outdoors, if possible, and some of the full-time students should study at home. There should be no lessons with classes cut in half, as required by the GEW and the parent council there.

Nearly 1,900 infections since fall break

Almost 1,900 new infections have been recorded in Hamburg schools since the end of the fall break. Some 3,700 students are currently in quarantine due to precaution or illness, that is to say, 1.5 percent of the student body in Hamburg. Additionally, 121 school classes are currently under quarantine due to suspected corona.
