Now it’s official: 586th Dresdner Striezelmarkt is canceled!

He too had held on to a Striezelmarkt execution to the end. Unfortunately, however, a relaxation of Corona regulations is not yet envisaged.

“[Da] If a new schedule is not expected until next week at the earliest, we no longer have a realistic option to keep the Striezelmarkt. “

He is very sorry for this decision. However, the infection process in Dresden does not allow any alternative.

Waiting for the situation to improve was not considered a good idea by the city council. After all, partners and distributors should no longer be left in the dark.

“Not at all […] To start with the market, a decision should have been made this week due to construction times. “

Besides, time was running out. “To even start the market in the first week of December, a decision would have to be made this week due to construction times,” said Dr. Robert Franke, Head of the Office of Economic Development.

“Of course there will now be some self-proclaimed experts who will accuse us that we should have canceled a long time ago. However, I think this is too myopic and inappropriate,” said the mayor of Dresden. “We have developed a good concept in advance to protect the health of the market visitors as best as possible.”

“The Striezelmarkt as the oldest German Christmas market it has such a long tradition and such high status in urban society that it was okay to fight for it until the last possible moment. “

It is not yet clear what exact costs have arisen for the city. To avoid taking any risks, construction had not yet started, but the necessary concepts of hygiene, traffic and safety had to be drawn up. An exact breakdown of costs is currently being prepared.

Now it will be discussed how things should proceed with the themed Christmas markets. Franke: “We have informed dealers in the Neumarkt, Pager Strasse and Hauptstrasse markets, among others, about the decision to go to Striezelmarkt and we are in contact.”
