Löw defends his decision
Someone who resigned from the national team after the World Cup and no longer plays a role at his club, Arsenal FC, sees it like this: Mesut Özil. Ironically, he gives advice to the national coach after the defeat in Spain. Just ten minutes after the final whistle, Özil spoke via Twitter and asked Boateng to return to the national team: “It is time to bring Boateng back.”
Özil had resigned in force after the 2018 World Cup. In a multi-party statement on social media, he harshly attacked the DFB and its then-president Reinhard Grindel. The crisis was triggered by a photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which became a political issue in Germany and the cause of heated discussions about racism.
