Iran is planning unlimited crown closings across the country

Iran is planning strict and unlimited closures across the country to halt the dramatically rising number of corona cases. “These closures will take effect on November 21 and are necessary to save lives,” President Hassan Ruhani said on Saturday. According to Ruhani, the nationwide lockdowns will continue indefinitely until the number of cases, and especially deaths, decreases.

“People have to accept the bitter fact that this problem will remain with us for a long time and that we will have to live with this unwanted guest for so long,” the president said on state television. Corona’s crisis team will announce what exactly the shutdowns should look like, which economic sectors will be affected and if there will also be curfews before November 21, according to Ruhani.

For economic reasons, Ruhani has so far opposed the closures. However, the dramatic increase in the number of cases in recent weeks left him no choice. Corona patients die almost every minute, new infections are registered every second. The total number of corona deaths in Iran currently exceeds 40,000 and the number of infected people is nearly 740,000.

However, the number of cases is likely to be more than double that indicated, because according to health experts there are still very few testing options in Iran.
