Tight shops and schools ?: Austria plans to toughen closure

As in Germany, there is currently a partial blockade in Austria. But the infection process is still dramatic. Now, apparently, the government is holding back. Firm measures are being debated, as in March.

Due to the increase in the crown figures after a week and a half of partial lockdown, Austria plans to tighten the measures. The government wants to release details this Saturday, as announced by the Federal Chancellery. According to Austrian media, the country is returning to the tough measures taken in March.

Consequently, all stores, with the exception of basic supplies such as supermarkets, drugstores, banks and pharmacies, must close as of Monday. Schools and kindergartens are also closing, and consequently care for families in need must be organized. Possible exit restrictions similar to strict measures in spring are considered. These measures have not yet been officially confirmed.

The number of reported infections peaked at 9,586 within 24 hours on Friday. However, this also included late registrations due to technical issues. The average of the last seven days is 554.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Austria, but regionally up to 850.

There have been 53 new deaths since Thursday. 3,922 Covid 19 patients are hospitalized, 567 of them in intensive care units, an increasingly critical value for the Austrian health system. After a consultation on Thursday night, the government’s Crown Commission recommended that more measures be taken to prevent the collapse of the health system.

The so-called partial blockade has been in force in Austria since November 3. Gastronomy, tourism, cultural activities and leisure facilities are largely closed, commerce, service providers and schools up to the intermediate level remain open. Additionally, check-out restrictions apply from 8 pm to 6 am, allowing people to only leave their “own private living space” for basic needs or to relax outdoors.
