Bad news shortly before the crown crisis summit:
With regard to crown restrictions and associated closures in the restaurant and leisure sector, no relaxation is in sight.
The deliberations of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the federal states’ prime minister on Monday are not expected to weaken measures that have been toughened since November 2, as government spokesman Steffen Seibert made clear on Friday. The increase in the number of infections has leveled off. But you cannot speak of a change of course. However, schools should – “if possible” – remain open.
Merkel and other members of the German government want to assess the situation in a video conference with the prime minister on Monday after they decided on the partial shutdown from November 2 to October 28.
Users of the application can access the survey here.
Merkel’s spokesperson said it was too early to conclusively assess the effectiveness of the measures. The goal remains to reduce the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants to 50 in an average of seven days.
According to figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), it is currently around 140 across the country, with peak values of around 190 and 180 cases in Berlin and Bavaria.
With infections detected within 24 hours, the RKI reported a peak of 23,542 cases and about 2,000 more than a week earlier. The expected breakwater effect has not (yet) occurred.
In light of these figures, several prime ministers lowered expectations of changes in resolutions in the latest federal and state consultations on the corona pandemic.
The ruling mayor of Berlin and current chairman of the Prime Minister’s Conference (MPK), Michael Müller (SPD), lowered expectations of a possible relaxation ahead of Monday’s deliberations. “At this point we can be cautiously optimistic, but nothing is clear.”said Müller of the “Rheinische Post”.
Media: We can probably bury hope that the blockade will be eased. Restaurants and bars may well have to be closed in December as well.
A narrow majority believe that the partial blockade is effective
A small majority of Germans believe that the Crown measures in place in November will work.
Fifty-five percent of participants in ZDF’s new “Politbarometer” believe that the restrictions will effectively limit the increase in new corona infections. 43 percent of those surveyed doubt it.
While 58 percent believe the measures are correct, 26 percent would like more restrictions. 14 percent consider that the partial blockade is excessive. Protests against Crown regulations are met with widespread misunderstanding: 86 percent of survey participants said they did not find these protests good. Only twelve percent supported them.
Despite the current tense situation in the crown, many citizens are optimistic:
In the “Politbarometer”, 85 percent were convinced that Germany will overcome the pandemic quite well in the coming months. 13 percent expressed the opposite opinion.
Spahn: “This virus has many slip marks”
Meanwhile, Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) agreed to a limited Christmas.
“This virus has a long history”, Spahn said. Large celebrations such as corporate Christmas parties or birthday parties and weddings are not predictable. You will have to endure that in winter.
Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) was a bit more optimistic: “We must succeed, that’s the clear goal that we can implement as much family as possible,” Söder told BILD.
The decisive question is not whether you can go on vacation during the Christmas holidays, but who you can spend the holidays with. What can really happen at Christmas will be seen in the next two weeks. Söder warned: “In the end we have everything in our own hands.”
