RKI reports over 21,000 new infections

IIn Germany, health authorities reported 21,866 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in 24 hours. That’s almost 3,400 more cases than on Wednesday, as can be seen from the RKI information from Thursday morning. Compared to Thursday of last week, the value is slightly higher. At that time, the number of new infections reported was 19,990. On Saturday a peak was reached with 23,399 registered cases.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted a total of 727,553 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany (as of November 12, 00:00). The number of deaths related to the virus rose from 215 to 11,982 as of Thursday. On Wednesday, that increase was 261 cases. The RKI estimates that around 467,800 people have recovered.

According to RKI’s situation report on Wednesday night, the so-called seven-day R was 0.89 (previous day: 0.92). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 89 other people. The value represents the infection process 8-16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection rate decreases.

Almost a dozen districts in Germany have not yet been designated as hotspots. In all other counties, the seven-day incidence on Wednesday was more than 35 or 50 new infections per 100,000 residents. There are also numerous regions where more than 200 new infections were recorded for every 100,000 in seven days.

Faced with the crisis, Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz sees enough room for maneuver in the budget to continue providing financial aid to those affected. “Our country has the financial strength to do everything this and next year is necessary to maintain control over the pandemic and cushion the associated economic consequences,” Scholz told the German publishing network (RND). “If necessary, we can add more.”
