Beware in the days of Corona: Pandemic reveals weaknesses

On German Care Day, the industry gives advice on its own future. The corona pandemic in particular has made the deficiencies in the care facilities very clear: too little protection, too few staff.

Despite the large number of pandemics, the Chancellor wants to avoid one thing in the fall and winter: making people in homes feel isolated and alone. Protecting the health of people in need of care has the highest priority, Angela Merkel said at the start of Day of Care in Germany:

“But protection alone cannot be the complete answer. In addition to protection, people in need of care also need care, especially from their family members. Therefore, it is important to make the most of all opportunities for visits and contacts. social”.

The Federal Chamber of Care calls for better protection for personnel

Recommendations for visits to long-term care establishments that are valid at the national level, that is also one of the demands of the Federal Chamber of It was founded last year to represent the interests of the 1.6 million health workers.

President Franz Wagner reiterated the Chancellor’s statement that good care also requires good framework conditions. They should be improved on key points. This also applies to protecting the health of employees. Sufficient protective clothing suitable for pandemics is necessary. CRP tests should be evaluated as a priority and should no longer require nursing staff to work twelve hours a day. Staffing must be significantly improved, based on a nationwide staff evaluation procedure, Wagner demanded. This also includes more training and qualifications to meet the demand.

Clinics must cancel planned operations

With the call for more money, the Federal Chamber of Nursing calls for wages in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities to be adjusted to those of hospital care. The salary level for all nursing professionals should be gradually increased to a starting salary of € 4,000 gross.

“With specific reference to the pandemic, the Federal Chamber of Attention requires that operations that can be planned, if justifiable, should be postponed,” Wagner said. Personnel released in this way should provide support in intensive care units and hospitals should be compensated for lost income.

Supply gaps, especially in rural areas

“Nurses are our most important asset in the fight against the pandemic,” said Patricia Drube, member of the Presidium of the Federal Chamber of Care. There would also be gaps in the classic care offerings in hospitals, care centers and outpatient services. A secure supply cannot always be guaranteed. This is particularly true of the very elderly in rural areas.

More motivation through more responsibility

Drube spoke of “obsolete medical structures”, so a “more efficient distribution of tasks among the health professions” had to be sought. “Right now we are wasting resources across sectoral borders, through blockages that we have in our social security books: in terms of who can do what with what qualifications,” Drube warned and recalled that nurses have direct contact with those who they need attention. If they were given more responsibility, that would motivate them more than just having to go on tour with medication and support stockings every day.

Until tomorrow, the German Care Day participants will discuss their industry and the future of care. Federal Minister for Family Franziska Giffey, Federal Minister for Labor Hubertus Heil and Federal Minister for Health Jens Spahn can also connect.
