More than a week ago, Americans elected a new president. Although this has already been determined, the current Trump does not want to admit defeat. Instead, his team relies on legal means. In Georgia, at least one counts again. And he sued in Michigan.
The US state of Georgia will manually recount all votes cast in the presidential election. This was announced by the responsible secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger. That was the right decision given the narrow gap between President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden, he said. Trump’s campaign team said it had requested the recount.
Georgia is not decisive for Biden’s electoral victory. The state of Pennsylvania has already raised it above the threshold of the necessary 270 voters. Georgia, with 16 voters, could only cement Biden’s success, or play a role if Trump’s attorneys succeed in overriding the results in other states. However, American legal experts estimate that the chances of this happening are very low.
Meanwhile, both politicians commemorated the country’s fallen soldiers on Veterans Day. Biden said that on this holiday he felt “the full weight of honor and responsibility that the American people have entrusted to me as the next president.” Trump continued to be confident of victory and said he would continue to support veterans.
Trump wins in Alaska
Raffensperger said Biden is ahead of Trump in Georgia by 14,111 votes. That is many times more than the difference in previous accounts. Furthermore, the difference has even increased in recent days. About five million votes were cast in the state. Biden would be the first Democrat since Bill Clinton in 1992 to win a presidential election in Georgia. Georgia candidates can request a recount if the gap is up to 0.5 percentage points. Biden currently leads the state at 49.5 percent, ahead of Trump at 49.2 percent.
Overall, however, Biden has already been chosen as the winner of the election, with 279 votes for the December election meeting. Trump got 217 votes after CNN declared him the winner in the state of Alaska. The sparsely populated state in the far northwest of the United States is considered a safe bastion of Trump’s Republicans.
With the emerging majority in North Carolina for the incumbent president, there would be 232 voters. In addition to Georgia and North Carolina, the outcome of the elections in Arizona is still unclear. There, Biden’s lead was recently reduced to a good 12,800 votes.
Lawsuit Filed in Michigan
Trump’s campaign team wants to demand the counting of votes in several states. In Georgia, Republicans on Wednesday named the names of four deceased who were voted in the Georgia election, records show. More examples would follow, he said. In Michigan, Trump’s lawyers filed the lawsuit announced the day before, in which they focused on obstructing Republican observers during the vote count.
In Philadelphia, the head of the agency in charge, Al Schmidt, himself a Republican, emphasized that, contrary to all claims, there has been no large-scale voter fraud. “I’ve seen the most amazing things on social media, none of which has anything to do with reality,” he said on CNN. Philadelphia, where Trump and his supporters speak of particularly massive electoral fraud, wants to officially confirm the election results on Nov. 23.
Biden’s team was optimistic that taking office in January could not be prevented by legal means. The Republican Party will continue to try to “cause confusion,” said Biden’s legal team leader Dana Remus. “But at the end of the day they have no proof and they won’t have a chance.” On Tuesday, Biden described it as “embarrassing” that Trump has yet to admit his electoral defeat.
