The new figures are well below the record of 23,399 cases that the institute counted last Saturday. But they are higher than a week ago: seven days ago, the RKI reported around 17,000 new cases.
According to the latest RKI figures, a total of 705,687 cases of infection have been registered in Germany since the start of the pandemic. The number of deaths related to the coronavirus in Germany rose to 11,767, 261 more than the previous day. The last time there were deaths related to the virus was in April. The RKI estimates that around 454,800 people have recovered.
