Stuttgart: Imprisonment of young rioters for a night of riots

About five months after the night of the Stuttgart riots, a young rioter was sentenced to a juvenile prison term of two and a half years in the first public trial.

The 18-year-old admitted to the Stuttgart district court that he broke the rear window of a police car and broke two side windows during the nightly riot. The verdict is well above the demands of the Prosecutor’s Office and the defense, which had ruled in favor of the suspension of the sentence.

“I just got carried away, I didn’t even think about it,” the young man from Gaildorf in the Schwäbisch Hall district had previously testified before the juvenile court.

In June, dozens of men, mainly young men, clashed with the police in the center of Stuttgart. Several officers were injured and shop windows were destroyed. The mutiny had made headlines and heated debates far beyond Stuttgart. As a result, the city and the countryside agreed to work more closely, especially on prevention and monitoring.

According to the Interior Ministry, the police have so far identified 106 suspects. 100 of them are said to have been directly involved in the riots, throwing bottles at emergency services, smashing shop windows and looting shops.

Six others are charged with possessing or offering looted items. Arrest warrants were obtained for about two-thirds of the suspects, 19 of whom, mostly young men, are currently in custody, according to the ministry.

The now convicted 18-year-old was not the first defendant after the nightly riots. In mid-October, a 16-year-old boy from Stuttgart appeared before the juvenile court of the district court. However, due to his age, the trial was held behind closed doors and the court withheld details about the defendant and his actions.

Another trial on the night of the riot will begin in the afternoon.

There were also riots in Frankfurt in the summer. In July, most of the young men got into a massive fight and threw bottles at police officers. 39 people were arrested at that time.
