Schools and kindergartens should be open as long as possible – that’s the motto of the Bavarian state government. If possible, all children should attend classroom lessons with a mask and hygiene requirements.
Wearing a mask is mandatory in all schools on all school grounds
All students must wear a mask after fall break. Also in primary schools, teachers and all students must cover their mouths and noses throughout the school grounds and during classes. This applies regardless of the number of new corona infections. The exception regulation that applied to primary schools in Munich was revoked on Sunday by the Upper Bavarian government and the Bavarian Ministry of Health.
School groups should not mix
In daily school life, as usual, the general rules of hygiene apply: wash your hands regularly and keep your distance whenever possible. If the framework conditions allow it, the groups of students should, as far as possible, stay with each other and not mix with other groups.
To use the Corona warning app, students can leave their smartphones turned on on the school premises and during classes. In addition to the general mask requirement and hygiene rules, the risk of infection should be reduced by regular ventilation.
The Bavarian Ministry of Culture recommends ventilating classrooms for at least five minutes every 45 minutes. If singing is done in class, classrooms must be ventilated for ten minutes every 20 minutes.
When does a class have to be quarantined?
If a student tests positive for the coronavirus, the entire class is excluded from classes for fourteen days and a quarantine is ordered. Even a teacher who tested positive is no longer allowed to teach and must go into quarantine. The responsible health department decides on a case-by-case basis whether to evaluate more teachers or students.
If a case of Covid-19 occurs in a senior year, the entire class or senior year is evaluated. For an upcoming final exam, students can interrupt the quarantine under special hygiene measures.
Homeschooling: When Does School Close?
Unlike in the past, there shouldn’t be an automatic switch from classroom teaching to homeschooling at Corona hotspots either. Affected individual schools must switch to distance learning if the infection requires it.
The previous three-step plan of the state government for Bavarian schools is practically suspended. Accordingly, an incidence value of 50 classes should generally be divided. However, this requirement has not been applied in practice in recent weeks. Now local health authorities should be able to decide whether schools remain open or not.
