Neither candidate prevailed in the mayoral election in Stuttgart on Sunday. In the first ballot, CDU candidate Frank Nopper led with 31.8 percent of the vote according to preliminary results Sunday night, with green politician Veronika Kienzle in second place with 17.2. percent. Whoever succeeds the green incumbent Fritz Kuhn, the one from Stuttgart now has to decide in a second round of the elections on November 29, as no one could achieve an absolute majority.

Social Democrat Marian Schreier, who ran as an independent candidate, took third place (15 percent) ahead of Stuttgart city councilor Hannes Rockenbauch of the SÖS / Linke parliamentary group (14.0) and SPD official candidate Martin Körner ( 9.8) in the other places. Michael Ballweg, head of the crown-denying “lateral thinking” platform, received only 2.6 percent of the vote, while AfD candidate Malte Kaufmann got 2.2. The turnout was 49 percent.

After eight years in office, Kuhn shockingly announced in January that he would not run for another term. A total of 14 candidates had applied for his successor.

In the second ballot on November 29, previous applicants can run again, but theoretically new candidates can also be nominated. In this vote, a simple majority of the votes is sufficient for victory. The outcome of the mayoral elections in the state capital is eagerly awaited in the context of the state elections in Baden-Württemberg next spring.
