In a major fire in the historic old town of Hannoversch Münden (Hann. Münden) in southern Lower Saxony, several half-timbered houses were almost completely destroyed. There were no injuries, according to the police, all residents were able to escape outside in time.

The fire that broke out in a commercial building the night before was under control Saturday afternoon, but the end of the extinguishing work was not yet in sight, as a police spokeswoman in Göttingen said. At least five houses were seriously damaged. How many of the buildings are uninhabitable has yet to be determined. There may also be damage to other houses.

From the office building, the flames had spread to several neighboring half-timbered houses. Due to the dense development, fighting the fire at night was very difficult. The fire department was on the scene with a large number: about 170 emergency services from all the surrounding fire departments were on duty.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear. So far, there has been no evidence that the fire was started on purpose, police said.

In the old town of Hann. Münden there are always fires, a fire in 2008 was particularly serious: at that time a heat in the old town caused damages of several million euros when several half-timbered houses from the 16th to 19th centuries were destroyed.
