Elections in the US: This is the way it is in contested states

Has the winner of the American election already been determined or can the tide still turn? The count is still ongoing in several states. What is the current situation? An overview.

The result of the presidential elections in the United States is yet to come. The head-to-head race between incumbent Donald Trump and his challenger Joe Biden has been going on for days. It takes 270 voters to enter the White House – Biden currently has 253 and Trump has 214. In five states that may be decisive for the election, the count is still going on – and everywhere it will be a very tight result.

Pennsylvania

The initial situation: Pennsylvania was considered key to Biden’s success even before the election. 20 voters are available here. In 2016, Donald Trump won it to the surprise of election researchers.

The cabin: At the beginning of the count, Trump was still leading with more than 700,000 votes, then Biden caught up. Currently, after counting 96 percent of the votes, the Democrat is about 0.5 percentage point ahead of the incumbent Republican, an advantage of more than 28,800 votes. As of yesterday, postal ballots postmarked on or before Election Day could still be accepted for scrutiny. The electoral administration said the final count could take days. The Supreme Court ordered Pennsylvania to separate mail ballots received after 8 p.m. on Election Day from other ballots. If the gap between the two candidates is only 0.5 percentage point or less at the end of the count, Pennsylvania’s election law requires an automatic recount.

The tendency: Biden’s side can hope to win Pennsylvania, if the current trend continues and the vast majority of mail-in votes yet to be counted will go to the Democratic candidate. With 20 voters, Biden would then have the necessary majority.

Georgia

The initial situation: Georgia is not a classic “swing state”: Democrats last won here in 1992. In 2016, Trump’s lead over Clinton was comfortable at 50.4 percent versus 45.3 percent. It is about 16 voters.

The cabin: 99 percent of the ballots have already been counted. Here, too, Trump was initially in the lead, but the lead continued to melt as the count went on. Meanwhile, Biden has expanded his lead to more than 7,000 votes. According to Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger, a recount is likely here as well, as the gap between Biden and Trump remains very small. That could take until the end of November.

The tendency: It could be a close win for Biden, but it wouldn’t be enough to break 270 voters. The fact is: if Biden wins, Trump can only achieve a tie among the electorate.

North Carolina

The initial situation: Voters in the state had almost always voted Republican in the past: In 2016, Trump’s lead over Hillary Clinton was 3.7 percent here. 15 voters are available here.

The cabin: In the East Coast state, Trump is ahead with more than 76,000 votes, which Biden can hardly match. So far, 98 percent of the votes have been counted. Special feature in North Carolina: Here, mail-in votes received before November 12, nine days after Election Day, are counted. Therefore, a result is not expected before next week.

The tendency: North Carolina is expected to return to Trump.

Arizona

The initial situation: Arizona voters have almost always voted reliably for the Republican candidate in the past; only in 1996 was Bill Clinton able to win for the Democrats in the southern state. However, Arizona’s population structure is changing dramatically, with newcomers from California and an increase in the proportion of the population with family roots in Latin America. Arizona sends eleven voters to the Electoral College.

The cabin: Fox television and the AP news agency had beaten the state against Biden early on the night of the election. Other media held back. In the course of the count, Trump caught up, but Biden currently leads with around 30,000 votes. 97 percent of the ballots are counted. More than 40,000 provisional ballots are among those that have yet to be counted. First, it must be checked whether they have the right to vote and whether the votes can be admitted. Secretary of State Katie Hobbs told CNN that the count of these papers is expected to be delayed until Wednesday.

The tendency: Trump has gotten a little closer to Biden and could still catch up. If Biden prevailed, this state would have changed as well.

Nevada

The initial situation: Nevada went to Democrats and then Republicans in the last election. Since 2008, however, the Democrats have always won. Nevada has six voters.

The cabin: In the western state, with the gambling stronghold of Las Vegas, Biden currently leads with just over 22,600 votes, which is 1.8 percentage points ahead. 93 percent of the ballots are counted.

The tendency: At the moment, Biden looks like a close win.
