Joe Biden is about to win the United States presidential election. The 77-year-old said in a speech in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, that he would win the race against US President Donald Trump.
Biden’s lead had increased even more overnight, in Pennsylvania he is already around 29,000 votes ahead of Trump, according to US broadcaster CNN. Biden also leads in the other states, where he is still in short supply; in Arizona with about 30,000 votes, in Nevada with more than 22,000 votes.
In Georgia, by contrast, a vote recount is on the way, where Biden is only about 4,000 votes ahead of Trump, corresponding to a difference of less than 0.1 percent. Both candidates can request a recount up to a difference of 0.5 percent.
Biden looks ahead
In his speech, Biden refrained from declaring his victory. Rather, he hopes to be able to speak to the Americans again on Saturday, and then as the winner. If he wins, he will be the president of all Americans, Biden said. Even those who would not have voted for him in the elections. “We can be opponents, but not enemies,” he said.
The speech had been delayed for hours, according to media reports, Biden had initially wanted to wait until his victory in Pennsylvania had been perfect: the state with its electorate would decide the race for the Democrats immediately.
Trump had previously threatened his rival on Twitter with proclaiming himself the winner of the election and referred to legal action taken by his team. Trump had already falsely declared his victory Wednesday night before a large chunk of the vote had been counted.
Trump’s team is fighting defeat
Trump’s campaign team continues to test legal channels to prevent Biden’s victory. Republicans filed an urgent motion in the Supreme Court. In the dispute over vote-by-mail in Pennsylvania, Conservative Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito ordered CET night that mail-in votes received after Election Day must be separated from other votes and counted separately.
Alito based his decision on Republican concerns that the Democratic-led recount would not obey the rules. Republicans did not provide any evidence to back up these claims.
Republicans came to a halt in the battle for the United States Senate. In Georgia, current Republican Senator David Perdue has to go to a runoff against Democratic challenger Jon Ossof. And in the second fight for a Senate seat in Georgia between Raphael Warnock and Kelly Loeffler, no decision was made.
Republicans and Democrats currently have 48 Senate seats each, but Republicans are expected to win Senate elections in Alaska and North Carolina. The majority in the Senate is at least 51 seats, in a deadlock of 50 to 50 seats the vote of the US vice president decides, in the case of a victory for Biden it would be that of Kamala Harris. The second round of the January 5 elections could determine whether the Democrats take power in the House of Congress and, therefore, throughout Parliament.
