For days, Donald Trump has been calling for voting to stop in the face of his impending electoral defeat. Now the US Supreme Court is supposed to help him: Republicans are demanding an urgent order. The court has already decided exactly this, but the situation has changed since then.
In the dispute over postal votes in the US state of Pennsylvania, President Donald Trump’s Republicans once again turned to the US Supreme Court. Pennsylvania Republicans urged the Washington Supreme Court to urgently ban the recount of ballots received after Election Day. These ballot papers should be separate from the others and should not be counted.
Pennsylvania had decided to expand postal votes due to the crown pandemic. In accordance with this, all ballots that are received by the election official will be accepted up to three days after election day, as long as they have a November 3 postmark. The deadline expired at 11pm German time on Friday.
Even before the election, Republicans had tried to get the Supreme Court to collect this extension. Constitutional judges refused to hear the case in mid-October and then again shortly before the elections. At the same time, they left open the possibility of a legal examination after the elections. After Trump-nominated attorney Amy Coney Barrett moved in, conservative justices have a large six-to-three majority on the Supreme Court.
Trend: votes do not influence the outcome of the elections
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden had last outdone incumbent Trump in the vote count in Pennsylvania. This is because mail-in votes are counted last and a particularly large number of Democratic supporters voted by mail. Meanwhile, Biden is nearly 15,000 votes ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania, which may well be the election. If the former vice president wins the state’s 20th electorate, he would get the 270 electoral votes needed for the presidency.
Pennsylvania electoral authorities have already issued a precautionary measure to separate mail-in votes received after Election Day from others. At the moment, it appears that their number is too small to influence the outcome of elections in the state.
Trump claimed victory on election night and demanded that the vote count be stopped. He announced that he would go to the Supreme Court. The president has repeatedly denounced alleged electoral fraud without evidence and accuses Democrats of trying to “steal” his election. These statements meet criticism even within their own ranks.
