The Robert Koch Institute reports more than 20,000 new infections for the first time
05.55 am: In Germany, new corona infections are at a new record: according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 21,506 new cases were recorded for the first time in 24 hours. The previous record was 19,990 cases the day before.
Current values are only partially comparable to spring as significantly more testing is now being done and more infections are being discovered as a result.
According to the RKI, a total of 519,089 people across Germany have been infected with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic (until November 6 at 12 am). The number of deaths related to the virus rose 166 through Saturday to a total of 11,096. The RKI estimates that around 402,500 people have recovered.
According to the RKI situation report on Thursday night, the number of views, or the R-value for short, was 0.79 in Germany (previous day: 0.81). This means that ten infected people infect eight other people on average. If the value is less than 1 for a longer period of time, the infection rate decreases. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier. To get to a controllable position, the number of plays would have to be well below 1 for a long time, 0.7 or even less.
The RKI also gives a seven-day R call, which shows what happened 8 to 16 days ago. This value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates on Thursday, it is 0.93, also slightly below 1.
More than 120,000 new cases of corona in the US
04.35 am: In the United States, a record number of new infections with the coronavirus were recorded for the second day in a row. According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 120,000 new cases were registered in 24 hours; the exact number is 123,085.
This clearly beat the record the day before. On Wednesday, the day after the US presidential election, the university announced 99,660 new cases of infection. Reuters, the New York Times, and the Washington Post even reported just over 100,000 new infections.
The total number of registered infections with the new coronavirus in the US since the beginning of the pandemic is more than 9.6 million. According to official statistics, the death toll in the country is just under 235,000. In absolute terms, the United States is by far the most affected country in the world by the pandemic.
Serious unrest at Corona’s protest in Slovenia
03.15 am: Serious riots broke out during a demonstration against anti-crown measures in Slovenia. In the capital Ljubljana, a crowd of hundreds of protesters threw bottles, rocks, firecrackers and smoke bombs at police on Thursday. He took action against the protesters with tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons.
According to local police chief Stanislav Vrecar, around ten policemen were slightly injured. Ten protesters were arrested. In the early afternoon, the police restored “peace and order” in the city, Vrecar said.
The police had warned the protesters that their gathering was prohibited due to applicable corona restrictions. The clashes began in front of the parliament building and then continued in other parts of the city. They lasted more than two hours.
Activists calling themselves the Slovenian branch of the hacking group Anonymous had called for the protest. Home Secretary Ales Hojs said soccer hooligans were among the crowd.
Wide-ranging crown restrictions have been in place in Slovenia since October, including exit restrictions and the closure of non-essential schools and stores. The Balkan state was relatively spared from the first corona wave in the spring, but the number of infections has risen significantly in recent weeks. In total, more than 41,000 cases of infection by the new virus have already been registered in the country of two million inhabitants.

Tight curfew in Greece from this weekend
02.00 am: In Greece, there will also be strict daytime exit restrictions in the fight against the corona pandemic. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that citizens can only leave their houses and apartments if they have requested to do so via their mobile phones and have received permission by SMS.
Consequently, the measure is applied for three weeks. Previously, a night curfew had been imposed across the country.
Mitsotakis called the current tightening of the lockdown a “difficult decision.” In view of the “dangerous” development of the number of infections, the measure is necessary. The stringent restrictions take effect at 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Consequently, many stores must remain closed. Only “essential” stores, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, can remain open.
Unlike the previous six-week closure in Greece in the spring, kindergartens and primary schools remain open. Classes for high school students, on the other hand, are only held remotely, as is already the case for students.
Recently, the number of infections in Greece has increased significantly. There were 2,646 new coronavirus infections and 18 new deaths on Wednesday, a sharp increase compared to the previous week. Since the pandemic began, almost 47,000 cases of infection and around 670 deaths have been registered in the country.
However, the Greek authorities are particularly concerned about the increase in the number of corona patients in intensive care units. The number of these patients using ventilators has more than doubled since the beginning of October: there were 169 patients on Wednesday.
DGB Demands New Special Layoff Protection for Tenants
1:40 am: In view of the new partial closure in Germany, the DGB calls for the special protection against dismissal for tenants to be reissued. It was “a big mistake” for the federal government to let the moratorium on termination due to the corona pandemic expire on June 30, the Funke media group quoted from a position paper from the German Federation of Trade Unions.
In it, the DGB calls for the resumption of protection against dismissal of rental and leasing relationships in the event of arrears in payments caused by the crown crisis. Also, unlike the spring regulations, rent refunds should not be allowed to accrue interest. In addition, the DGB requires special regulation for long-term debtors, which should avoid turning off electricity, gas, water and telecommunications. Evictions must also be suspended.
“The house has to be safe. Millions of tenants in Germany need this signal,” said Stefan Körzell, a member of the DGB board.
The DGB is supported by the German Renters Association (DMB). The situation has worsened since the spring, said DBM president Lukas Siebenkotten of the Funke media group. At the time, tenants generally still managed to pay their rent by restricting other expenses and using reservations: “But now the reservations are exhausted.”
The consumer protection spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, Johannes Fechner, also supports the demand for a new rent moratorium. “Especially when small businesses and the self-employed have been able to fight their way through the crown crisis so far, we should continue to support them and extend the moratorium on termination,” Fechner told Funke newspapers.
The opposition came from the Union faction. “I do not see space or justification to reintroduce the rent moratorium,” said consumer protection expert Jan-Marco Luczak (CDU) on the same sheets. With a new moratorium, the problems would only pass from the tenant’s side to the owner’s side, he warned: “Nothing would be gained, because many small private owners also depend on rental income.”
The federal government’s special three-month crown regulation in favor of tenants expired at the end of June. Landlords could not give notice during this period if tenants could no longer pay their rent due to the crown crisis.
