During a visit to a café, two young men were found in a hail of bullets. One was injured. However, they saved a policeman who was shot. The media now celebrates martial artists as heroes.

They wanted to have the last coffee before curfew and became rescuers amid an Islamist attack: the two young martial artists Mikail Özen and Recep Tayyip Gültekin rescued a seriously wounded police officer in Vienna who was shot by a murderer . Özen reported in a video that was shared on social media. Men are now celebrated as heroes in the Austrian and Turkish media.

“We suddenly ended up in the middle of a battle,” says Özen, 25, whose ring name is “Iron Mike.” “Suddenly shots rang out, people were lying on the ground covered in blood.” At first they would have helped an old woman to safety. His friend was slightly wounded in the leg by shrapnel. The images on the two’s Instagram accounts support the descriptions.

“After I took the woman to a nearby restaurant, the terrorist pointed his gun at me,” Gültekin told Turkey’s Anadolu news agency. He fell to the ground, but was injured in the leg. Then they noticed the wounded police officer.

The officer was seriously injured, the rescuers could not reach him due to the danger. A cell phone video, which was also distributed by TRT, presumably shows the two martial artists on the edge of a pavilion at Schwedenplatz trying to get close to the officer while staying under cover. The shots can also be heard in the video.

They then took the wounded man to the ambulance, Özen reported. “I wish the policeman a good recovery, I hope he is well,” he said, still visibly shaken. Gültekin did not go to the hospital that night. “I didn’t want to be a burden because I thought there would be a lot of injuries,” Gültekin said. The wound is not very big, today it will be treated.

According to the authorities, four bystanders and the attacker himself were killed in the terrorist attack. 15 people were injured, some seriously, including the police officer. Currently, the police are looking for other possible perpetrators. The man who was shot felt particularly close to the “Islamic State” terrorist militia. “I want to say one more thing,” Özen concluded his message on Instagram. “Muslims of Turkish descent abhor any kind of terror. We support Austria, we defend Vienna. We respect Austria.” They are always ready to help.
