The shots rang out in central Vienna on Monday night. There were several injuries, the Vienna police wrote on Twitter, having previously confirmed a “major police operation.”
According to information from SPIEGEL, numerous police cars are used near Schwedenplatz. Officials urge residents to stay in their apartments and not to leave restaurants and bars.
The exact circumstances were initially unknown. The “Kronen Zeitung” reported that an armed policeman was probably shot and in danger of death. Florian Klenk, editor-in-chief of the Viennese weekly “Falter” writes on Twitter, citing the Interior Ministry one dead and several injured.
At least one alleged perpetrator has reportedly been arrested and other perpetrators are on the run. Videos broadcast by private broadcaster “Oe24” showed a masked shooter firing in the street.
