His back is to the wall. With a daring final push, Donald Trump is trying to turn things around; Germany also plays a role in this.
Polls are bad and time is running out, but Donald Trump has come to present himself to his followers once again as the shining winner. When he takes the stage, he throws red caps at the audience to the beat of his favorite song “God Bless the USA.” The well-known inscription: “Make America Great Again”.
As he performs on the windy runway at a regional airport, he doesn’t let a minute pass before he gets to the point: on Tuesday, he will win the state of Pennsylvania. “And we will win four more great years in the White House.”
Donald Trump tries everything in the last meters to change the mood in the country again. Fly across the United States, from Michigan to Florida, from Wisconsin to Georgia. Fourteen electoral rallies in three days. In Focus: Pennsylvania in the Northeast, where it won a very slim game in 2016 and has to win this year, should still work out the other big four years in the White House. He is also behind Joe Biden in the polls.
“Biden will lock up their families”
In the small town of Reading, showman Trump has no trouble creating a good mood. He’s kidding, he’s the entertainer, but how does Trump want to convince people? More than 90 million Americans have cast their votes early. Therefore, Trump must hope to achieve a record result on Election Day.
On paper, it’s mostly about Corona and Joe Biden. It sounds like this:
- “Biden will lock their families in his house!”
- “With Biden there is no school, no Christmas, but endless closings.”
- “Biden sends you into a deep and catastrophic economic crisis.”
- “If Biden wins, China will own America.”
There is no lock with him, says the president, while the number of new infections and occupied intensive care beds are skyrocketing almost across the country. Trump repeatedly describes Joe Biden as corrupt, lazy and weak.
The big problems of the final message
These messages have obvious problems: As the crown crisis intensifies again, more and more Americans are moving away from Trump’s line. In a new poll conducted by Trump’s friendly broadcaster Fox News, 61 percent want containment of Covid-19 to be the priority, and only 36 percent, as Trump promoted, on the rapid reopening of the economy.
And Biden’s corruption allegations are not backed by evidence or fall on particularly fertile ground: the Democrat is simply more popular than Hillary Clinton four years ago. Another look at the Fox News figures: More respondents view Trump (56 percent) as corrupt than Biden (40 percent).
Then the language comes to Germany
But Trump doesn’t follow the comments prepared on the teleprompter anyway. Over and over again he improvises and talks about what he personally doesn’t like. Germany also appears several times. With more than a hint of satisfaction, Trump says there are now big problems in the former Corona Germany model.
Later, when the teleprompter said it was about China, it complained about Barack Obama’s popularity in Germany. “I have ancestors there who should like me, but they like Obama better,” says the activist.
For Trump, this is due to the fact that he pushed for higher defense spending by the Germans. Since Obama has campaigned for Biden, Trump has repeatedly spoken out about his popularity in Germany. Trump’s logic: Anyone who is popular abroad is not doing justice to the work of the president of the United States. America first.
Can you afford it?
There is applause for this among loyal fans in Reading, Pennsylvania. But can an electoral activist with his back to the wall really afford such digressions?
Trump also prefers to publicize his personal disputes in the final sprint and spread claims about impending fraud in the electoral count. He not only complains about Biden and his vice-candidate Kamala Harris, but also about “fake polls”, “criminal media” and, more recently, the Supreme Court.

The Constitutional Court did not previously cut the vote-by-mail count in Pennsylvania as requested by Republicans. Votes that were mailed before the election and that arrive within three days of Election Day will also be counted there. “They don’t treat me well,” Trump says of the constitutional court, to which he himself has appointed three of the nine justices. That will only result in “fraud”.
The essence of the discourse has less to do with a government program after the elections than with the outcome of the elections itself. Trump mixes his staging of an impending victory with a safeguard in the event of a defeat. As a precautionary measure, the president delegitimizes the result of the elections. His real bottom line is: if I lose, it can’t have been right.
