Corona emergency plan: patients should be distributed nationwide

Clinics are again burdened with Covid 19 cases. The federal and state governments are preparing to distribute intensive care patients across the country in an emergency. For this, Germany is divided into five regions.

The federal and state governments want to distribute intensive care patients suffering from Covid-19 between federal states if capacities are in short supply. The chairman of the health ministers conference, Berlin Health Senator Dilek Kalayci, told the newspapers of the Funke media group that Germany was divided into five regions, which reported on the utilization of clinical capacities and made available free clinical capabilities if needed.

“If a state or region shows signs of heavy use or even overload, supra-regional transport of patients to receptive regions will be organized through offices centrally established in the regions,” Kalayci said.

Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia each form their own main regions

According to a concept by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, cited by the Funke newspapers, Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have merged to form one of the five northern supply regions. In the east are Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In the southwest, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland will support each other. Thus, the most populated federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria form their own large regions.

A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior told the dpa news agency: “Clear structures and processes, specialized medical advice and pooling of transport resources ensure that if there is a threat or regional overload of the capacities of intensive care, a balance can be managed within Germany even under complex framework conditions. “

The number of intensive care corona patients has increased considerably

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the number of Covid-19 cases treated in intensive care has more than doubled in the last two weeks from 730 patients (17,10) to 1,839 patients (30,10). The cause is a significant increase in new corona infections in Germany. A new record was recently reached with 19,059 cases in one day.

However, the director of the Helios clinics, Francesco De Meo, spoke in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung” against keeping hospital beds free for Covid 19 patients as a precaution. In the spring, hospitals were encouraged to do so and received a bonus in return.

“We were far from not having enough free intensive capacity,” De Meo told the newspaper. “Our hospitals can cope with significantly more Covid-19 than we assumed in March.” One week in advance, hospital registration data can be used to determine practically how many severe cases of Covid 19 the healthcare system will face. “This week is enough for us to completely change the operations of the hospital.”
