In Germany, the number of corona cases continues to increase rapidly. The Robert Koch Institute counts more than 18,000 new infections in 24 hours. Meanwhile, lawyers take on a successful wave of lawsuits against the impending partial closure.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, the number of new corona infections recorded in Germany has reached a new high of 18,681 cases in one day. The previous record the day before was 16,774 cases. On Friday a week ago, the RKI reported 11,242 new infections. The current values are only partially comparable to those of the spring, as many more tests are now underway and more infections are discovered as a result.
According to the RKI, a total of 499,694 people across Germany have been infected with Sars-CoV-2 since the start of the pandemic (as of October 30, 00:00). The number of deaths related to the virus rose 77 through Thursday to a total of 10,349. The RKI estimates that around 345,700 people have recovered.
According to RKI’s management report on Thursday, the number of views, or R-value for short, was 0.97 in Germany (previous day: 1.03). This means that one infected person infects another. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.
In addition, the RKI includes the so-called seven-day R in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.17 on Thursday. It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
Constitutional lawyer expects wave of lawsuits
A few days before the start of the partial closure in Germany, the state cabinets of several federal states are meeting for special sessions. The governments of Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Saxony and Saarland want to implement the resolutions of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime minister in the respective state law. In Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia, state governments had already issued the relevant ordinances on Thursday.
Meanwhile, there are strong doubts about whether the new corona measures are legally watertight. The vice president of the FDP, Wolfgang Kubicki, writes in a guest contribution to the “Passauer Neue Presse”: “The decisions remain of such a remarkable contradiction that it is only questionable when the first court annuls them and not if”. The Vice-President of the Bundestag asks: “Why do nail salons have to close, but not hairdressers? Why do restaurants also close where you are still far from self-defined thresholds?” All this can no longer be explained.
Constitutional lawyer Ulrich Battis expects a successful wave of lawsuits. “I firmly assume that there will be a large number of lawsuits and that many will get away with it as before in the interim legal protection procedures, see the annulled bans on accommodation and curfew,” Battis told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. The first decisions could already be made next week. “But I don’t expect the courts to overturn the entire blockade.”
Starting Monday, contacts will be limited to ten people from a maximum of two households. The catering establishments, as well as the cultural and leisure facilities, will be closed throughout November. Hotels are prohibited from accepting tourists. However, schools and nurseries must remain open.
