Party convention in Corona hotspot: Berlin SPD is by no means exemplary – Berlin

[ad_1]

With new faces, and perhaps even a new policy, the Berlin SPD wants to enter the election campaign next year to claim the Red City Hall for itself. The future head of the country and top candidate of the Social Democrats, Franziska Giffey, must defend this new beginning together with the leader of the SPD parliamentary group, Raed Saleh.

But this can only work if the Federal Family Minister builds trust for her and her party, even in unusual situations. The corona pandemic is an emergency and politicians in positions of responsibility should not only make smart suggestions, but should also be role models.

This also includes carefully considering whether and under what conditions it is still appropriate these days to hold party conferences with more than 300 participants – this is the result of the 278 most technical delegates, journalists and others. The federal CDU and several state associations of the SPD have already made a difficult decision: they are postponing their congresses.

Other parties are considering such considerations as well, but the Berlin Social Democrats insist on their right to hold a big event on the weekend at the Neukölln hotspot, of all places, despite the explosive increase in crown numbers and the new contact restrictions that affect all citizens.

Of course, there are reasons for this: the SPD finally wants to carry out the changing of the guard, which was postponed in May. From a democratic point of view, it is also quite problematic if party congresses are canceled; Furthermore, the congress of the electoral parties is organized in such a way that it complies with current hygiene regulations.

Müller and Saleh are strict guardians of the crown’s rules

Still, it’s not okay. Not only the Berlin government and the still head of the SPD, Michael Müller, but also the leader of the SPD parliamentary group and future party leader, Raed Saleh, have been among particularly strict guardians of official Covid-19 regulations during months. They admonish and regulate, only when it comes to their own cause, they are now exceptionally generous.

Citizens will remember that in this exceptional situation, so stressful and controversial for everyone, the party that provides the mayor of the government speaks with a double language and does not act exemplary at all. The SPD should think again.
