Corona Measure in the Bundestag: Wolfgang Kubicki warns AfD of violating mask requirement

The AfD tries to crack down on the mask requirement in the Bundestag. However, so far this has not been successful. Before the start of the Bundestag week, Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki (FDP) warned the AfD against violating the Corona measure.

“The deputies of the AfD can let it depend,” Kubicki told the “Handelsblatt.” “When in doubt, however, they are threatened with calling to order, with a fine of 1,000 euros or even with exclusion from a meeting if they persistently refuse to wear a mask.” Numerous committees of the Bundestag already meet in Berlin on Monday, and the plenary meets from Wednesday to Friday.

A general decree of the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, has been in force since October 6: Oral and nasal protection must be worn in all Bundestag buildings, including the plenary hall. However, MEPs can remove them if they have sat down, in the plenary hall and in conference rooms, or if they are standing at the lectern. The regulation affects employees of the Bundestag administration, as well as employees of the parliamentary group and members of parliament.

Shortly after the announcement of the measure, the AfD announced that it would take action against it. Last week, the Bundestag judicial office rejected the corresponding cease and desist declaration.

The request came in a letter from a lawyer as a “warning.” 19 AfD MPs and nine employees of the parliamentary group wanted Schäuble to sign the cease-and-desist declaration. Schäuble’s blanket order to wear mouth and nasal protection was, however, formally and materially legal, the Bundestag administration announced on Friday upon request.

Kubicki now said that the AfD will have a difficult time taking legal action against the mask requirement. The Bavarian Constitutional Court had already declared in September that wearing the mask “was not an inadmissible interference in the free mandate,” added the vice president of the FDP. “But the AfD only cares about political provocation anyway.”
