Corona protest in Berlin: police ban the demonstration and let it go anyway

In protest against state crown restrictions, protesters took to the streets again on Sunday in Berlin. Police spoke of about 2,000 people who gathered at Alexanderplatz in the Mitte district. Elevator was registered for 2500 participants.

The police spoke of a dynamic situation. “To a large extent there was no minimum distance and no obligation to cover your mouth and nose,” police tweeted. However, these were conditions. Therefore, the applicant for the demonstration was prohibited from operating an elevator.

Then the situation at Alexanderplatz became confusing. A reporter for the dpa news agency reported that the protesters left the crowd and drove away from Alexanderplatz without a police escort.

A police announcement also said that the organizer had canceled the event at Alexanderplatz. Police officers were also observed to target individual participants, for example by pinning them to the ground or carrying them away.

“We don’t want these photos”

However, most of the participants were allowed to walk undisturbed by the police on the planned demonstration route in Karl-Marx-Allee, even though these people violated the conditions of the demonstration. When asked, the head of operations told SPIEGEL: “Of course we could have stopped them. But we don’t want these photos.” Police said they had about 600 people in action.

Even after the lateral thinking demonstration in Berlin at the end of August, there was much criticism of the police. It failed to enforce infection protection rules, and it failed to prevent a previously announced storm on the steps of the Reichstag building.

Once again, the protesters included families with children and the elderly. They carried protest banners and some came out with drums and whistles. At Alexanderplatz and Karl-Marx-Allee, the protesters shouted, among other things, “We are here, we speak out because they are stealing our freedom” and “We are the people.”

The demonstration, banned by the police, ends around 4 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon, protesters moved as planned to the Kosmos event center, where the “World Health Summit” was originally supposed to take place. Due to the increasing number of infections, the conference will only take place online.

All speeches and debates will be held digitally, said a spokeswoman for the summit. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will speak at the three-day health summit. The summit will officially open on Sunday evening.

At around 4 pm, the applicant called the demonstration over, as announced by the Berlin police on Twitter. According to the dpa news agency, the police officers took the stage. Participants had to leave the scene quickly, otherwise the police wanted to respond with reports.
