Hamilton also broke a record for former German Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher. With 92 career victories, Hamilton has one more win than Schumacher. The Brit can also catch up after World Cup victories this season. Schumacher has seven, Hamilton six.

“Congratulations Lewis, you made history,” the Mercedes box said over the radio to its record-breaking cockpit after crossing the finish line. “Thank you guys, thank you, none of this would be possible without you,” he replied, “I’m very proud of all of you.”

Bottas is almost 26 seconds behind in second

Hamilton’s victory was safe. Mercedes’ colleague Bottas was almost 26 seconds behind. It was the racing team’s fourth double win this season. Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari was tenth.

At the start of the race there was a short rain that briefly mixed the field. Hamilton, who had taken the lead early on, initially fell to third place behind Bottas and Spaniard Carlos Sainz in the McLaren.

Shortly before the end of the first lap, Sainz even took the lead and surprised with two better times before his tires started to wear out. On lap six, Bottas took over from the Spaniard at the top, and on lap 20, Hamilton regained the lead.

In the overall standings, Hamilton extended his lead over Bottas with his eighth win in the twelfth race of the season: with 256 points, his lead over the Finns is already 77 points.
