An agreement has been reached on collective bargaining for the public service of the federal and state governments. Consequently, earnings will increase by 3.2 percent, in the lowest wage groups, even by about 4.5 percent.

According to the agreement of April 1, 2021, the wages and salaries of around 2.3 million employees will increase by 1.4 percent, but at least by 50 euros. In a second stage, a year later, there will be an increase of 1.8 percent, employers and unions announced on Sunday after four days of negotiations. The collective agreement runs until the end of 2022.

The head of the Ver.di services union, Frank Werneke, said there would be an increase in income of about 4.5 percent for the lowest wage groups.

Ver.di and Beamtenbund had previously asked for 4.8 percent by the end of 2021, but at least 150 euros more money a month. The original offer from the employer called for a total of 3.5 percent more salary in three annual stages through March 2023.

More money for caregivers

In addition to general salary increases, there will be subsidies for care workers in the future. Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) described this as a “historic breakthrough”. According to Ver.di, the pay increase for nurses will total about 8.7 percent by the end of 2022.

All employees should also receive a crown bonus of 600-200 euros this year. Seehofer announced that the result would be transferred to federal officials to the same effect.
