For reasons that are not yet clear, a 37-year-old Mazda driver and a 22-year-old BMW driver collided head-on with their vehicles on the country road just before Schleibnitz, police said early Sunday morning.

The Mazda driver and his 24-year-old passenger were so seriously injured in the impact that they died at the crash site.

Four children, who were also in the car, were seriously injured in the accident, as was the BMW driver. The 22-year-old had to be freed from his wrecked car and taken to hospital in a helicopter.

According to information from TAG24 from the scene of the accident, three of the children (3, 11 and 14) are nieces and nephews of the two deceased, while the eight-month-old baby is the son of the 24-year-old who died in the incident.

A total of nine shepherds would have taken care of the emergency and family services at the scene.

Three of the relatives are said to have suffered a concussion and were also taken to hospital.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
