Erdogan versus Macron: he should “control his mental state” – foreign policy

These are the harsh words of the Turkish President against French President Emmanuel Macron.

At a congress of his AKP party on Saturday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized “worrying signs of growing Islamophobia in Europe.” As an example, he cited Macron, who declared war on radical Islamism in France after his teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded a week ago.

Paty was murdered by an 18-year-old with Russo-Chechen roots after showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in class.

“What kind of problem does this person named Macron have with Islam and Muslims?” Erdogan asked at Saturday’s event. Macron should be in psychological treatment, the Turkish president added. He should have his “mental state controlled,” Erdogan said Saturday in the speech that was also broadcast on television. His French counterpart does not understand freedom of belief.

The French Elysee Palace reacted indignantly and called the French ambassador in Ankara. “President Erdogan’s statements are unacceptable,” a representative of the French presidency said on Saturday. “We do not tolerate insults.”

It is also said from France that they are demanding that Erdogan change his policy, “which is dangerous in all aspects.”
