The right-wing party rally scheduled for Saturday in Bremen was canceled on short notice by organizers on Friday night. After the Superior Administrative Court (OVG) only allowed the rally at night under certain conditions, the organizer informed the assembly authority and canceled the demonstration, according to a police spokesman. Reasons were not given. The police will continue to show their presence in the city area, as alternative meetings cannot be ruled out.
The Dierechte party and various national associations of the NPD called the demonstration. They also want to display previous flags and war flags of the German Reich in black, white and red. The motto: “Black, white and red are not prohibited.” They want to protest against the fact that its public use is being prosecuted in Bremen as an administrative offense.
Previously, the authorities inside Bremen had completely banned the demonstration. Among other things, because the demonstration was “only superficially to express opinion” and was more about “staging far-right ideas and solidifying the Reich flag as a new common far-right symbol.” However, the OVG decided that the total ban imposed by the interior authorities was disproportionate. In this demonstration, displaying the flags is covered by freedom of expression, the court concluded. In general, the result is “no intimidating appearance”, as the interior authorities claim.
This eventually overturned the ban, but the court imposed conditions on the demonstration. Instead of an hour-long march through the entire Hanseatic city, protesters should only be allowed to gather in the courtyard of the cathedral from 3 pm to 6 pm In addition, the court limited the number of participants to 100.
