Some 19 years ago Peggy, then nine years old, disappeared from Upper Franconia, now investigations into the case have been discontinued. The suspicion against an undertaker could not be substantiated, the Bayreuth prosecutor said.

The girl disappeared on May 7, 2001 when she was returning home from school. In July 2016, a mushroom picker found parts of her skeleton in a forest near Rodacherbrunn in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia, about 20 kilometers from Peggy’s hometown of Lichtenberg in the Hof district. It is not yet clear how exactly he died.

A man from the Wunsiedel district admitted two years ago that he had driven the dead girl into the woods in his car. However, he denied killing Peggy. At that moment, he took care of a friend’s lifeless boy at a bus stop. The undertaker later retracted his confession.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the information is not sufficient for a murder charge. Other charges, such as obstruction of punishment, are prohibited by law and can no longer be prosecuted.

Peggy’s investigation has attracted several suspects over the years. The case of a man with a mental disability, who was convicted by a court of Peggy’s murder in 2004, but was acquitted in a new trial ten years later, acquired special relevance.

In addition, investigators discovered traces of DNA from NSU terrorist Uwe Böhnhardt at the site where Peggy’s skeleton was found. This later turned out to be contamination from a forensic device.
