It’s a sad new record: German health authorities recorded 11,287 new cases of coronavirus infection in one day. However, the R-value has decreased again.

The number of new corona infections detected in one day in Germany has increased dramatically again and has exceeded 10,000 for the first time. According to the Robert Koch Institute, health authorities reported 11,287 cases in the 24 hours of Thursday morning. The previous high since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany was reached on Saturday with 7,830 new infections.

On Thursday of last week, 6,638 cases were reported for the first time more than in the spring. However, the current values are only partially comparable to those of the spring, because now many more tests are being done and therefore more infections are discovered.

According to experts, recently reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago due to the time between infection, test, result, and report. So it will take some time before the policy measures are reflected in the registration figures.

Hover over a county to see how many new infections there were in the past seven days per 100,000 residents. The data comes from Robert Koch Institute and are updated daily. Note: districts and cities in the district with the same name are displayed separately. For example, to see the value of the city of Rosenheim in the Rosenheim district, you may need to zoom in on the map.

In view of the increasing number of cases, the Robert Koch Institute wants to provide information on the development of the pandemic in Germany at an online press conference on Thursday. RKI President Lothar Wieler recently emphasized the seriousness of the current situation.

“An accelerated increase in the number of transmissions can now be observed in Germany,” the RKI writes in its management report on Wednesday. “Therefore, an urgent call is made for the entire population to commit to protection against infections.” The RKI also includes rules for distance and outdoor hygiene, ventilation of indoor spaces and, when necessary, covering the mouth and nose.

Since the beginning of September, the number of corona tests per week has fluctuated between 1.1 and 1.2 million, with a very slight upward trend. However, the positive rate has increased from 0.75 to 3.63 percent over time. The backlog of samples has increased again for two weeks. Some laboratories reported problems with the delivery of work materials.

More recently, almost a third of all districts and cities registered by the RKI were above the threshold of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week (data as of October 21), after which more stringent measures of protection against infection in many places. In around 30 districts and cities, the value was even higher than 100.

Despite the increasing number of cases: the R-value is decreasing

According to the RKI, at least 392,049 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the start of the Corona crisis (as of October 22 at 12:00 am). Therefore, the number of deaths related to a corona infection was 9,905. That was 30 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 306,100 are now recovered.

According to RKI’s status report on Wednesday, the number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.09 in Germany (previous day: 1.25). This means that ten infected people infect almost eleven more people. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

In addition, the RKI gives the so-called R of seven days in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value is now 1.17 (previous day: 1.23). It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
