The AfD continues to resist the mask requirement imposed by the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble. Now the party is demanding through a lawyer that he resign from duty. And put an ultimatum.

Several MPs and employees of the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag do not want to wear mouth and nose protection in parliament from next week. Therefore, it has sent the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, a warning through a lawyer with the request to submit a declaration of cease and desist. Schäuble should commit to repealing the general decree on the mask requirement. The CDU politician will receive an ultimatum until Friday 8 am

In the lawyer’s letter, which is available to the German Press Agency, it is stated that Schäuble has domicile rights in the Bundestag. However, this does not extend to the question of the dress in which the deputies exercise their mandate. Only the legislature would have had the power to make the requirement for a mask mandatory in the halls of parliament.

“He attacks nonsensical government regulations in court”

The Bundestag administration confirmed receipt of the letter on Wednesday. This will now be verified by the judiciary, a spokesperson said. The mask requirement ordered by Schäuble is in effect from October 6. Experts advise wearing a mask whenever distances cannot be maintained. Read more about it here.

The parliamentary group AfD had already decided to take action against the mask requirement in court. His legal adviser Stephan Brandner now said that the AfD was issuing the small-scale warning of what it wanted from citizens outside of parliament. They should sue against “state harassment”: “He attacks state regulations senseless in court.”

The lawyer represents 19 members of the AfD and nine members of the parliamentary group. In addition to Brandner, MPs also include parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel, as well as Dirk Spaniel and Paul Hampel.
