Mnchen – There was an extremely loud explosion. I heard the bang of the metal. Window panes shattered. I saw shards of glass flying everywhere. “
Fabián B. (21) goes to the supermarket when he witnesses the terrible accident. “A worker who was previously on the crane fell from the top and landed in a construction container at Arabellastrae.” Fabian B. is with the professional fire department. On Wednesday he left. The 21-year-old immediately notifies his colleagues.

Two seriously injured construction workers

At 9:30 am, the construction crane, which was on the flat roof of a 30-meter-high building belonging to the Hypovereinsbank (HVB), crashes. When it hits it, it twists on the edge of the building like a match. Parts of the boom thunder on the sidewalk and street.

The blow is so great that the earth shakes. “I even felt the shock here,” reports an employee who works across the street at the Sheraton Hotel on the 22nd floor. “I was sitting in a chair. I still thought that if the dumbbells drop in the gym above, that is different”.

Two construction workers are seriously injured in the accident. Two Hypovereinsbank employees and a doctor from a nearby ENT practice run towards the worker (32) who has fallen from the basket on the boom of the crane and is immobile next to the container. A little later he is taken to a clinic by ambulance.

The cause of the accident is unknown.

Height rescuers from the fire brigade and paramedics from the Aicher ambulance rush toward the crane driver (30) who is lying on the roof. The man is taken by helicopter to a clinic.

When the rescuers return to the ambulance, their faces are very serious. Your clothes are stained with blood.
“We hope that the injured will recover as soon as possible,” said an HVB Bank spokeswoman.

It is not yet clear how the tragic accident occurred. “It is verified whether it is a single fault or a technical defect,” says a police spokesman in the afternoon. An accident assessor is involved and an expert from the local construction commission checks whether the building can be re-entered.

Until the pandemic, around 3,800 employees worked at the Hypovereinsbank location in Arabellapark, 1,400 of them in the HVB Tower. However, today many employees work from home. The low building is empty. It will be extensively renovated and modernized after the HVB Tower is powered up. The entire project costs 250 million euros.

More recently, construction workers were busy replacing the glass and aluminum façade elements in the “Flachbau Nord” building. The roof crane was used for this. This work is almost finished.

The crane must be dismantled on Wednesday. An Allgu company was commissioned to do this. The gondola was already waiting at Arabellastrae to take away the disassembled crane.

The police asked the witnesses who photographed or filmed the course of the accident to upload the recordings at this link: https://medienupload-portal02.polizei.bayern.de

The video shows the collapse of the crane

There is a video on YouTube showing the crane collapsing in Arabellapark. Apparently it was recorded by a cyclist’s helmet camera.
