Borussia Dortmund started with a defeat in Group F of the Champions League. BVB lost 1: 3 (0: 2) at Lazio Rom and need better performances and results in the coming weeks against outsiders Club Brugge and Zenit St. Petersburg. Because against Lazio, the Bundesliga team showed long stretches of erratic performance, the goals for the Romans were scored by Ciro Immobile (minute 6), goalkeeper Marwin Hitz in own goal (23) and Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro (76) . Erling Haaland faced BVB (71st).

In the run-up to the match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, there was much discussion from Dortmund about the lineup of the defense chain. The ailing Lukasz Piszczek got fit in time and was able to play alongside Mats Hummels and Thomas Delaney. With Hummels, BVB coach Lucien Favre was only available as a trained central defender: Emre Can was missing, Dan-Axel Zagadou was injured and Manuel Akanji was also unfit after his crown infection.

The initial deficit was not due to coordination problems in the newly formed defense. It was a simple playing error by Thomas Meunier that led Joaquín Correa to the ball in the Dortmund penalty area. The Argentine put through Immobile and the striker rose point-blank over the heat that was once again in Roman Bürki’s goal to the goal of his former employer.

BVB produces many errors in the structure of the game.

The 0: 1 ensured that the original starting position of the game no longer existed. Favorite Dortmund lined up mistake after mistake, Lazio, on the other hand, seemed very confident and could have led higher. When Raphael Guerreiro missed BVB’s best chance to date (21), Hitz led Luiz Felipe’s header from a corner kick to make it 2-0 at his own goal. Meunier could have made up for his mistake shortly after and scored the next goal, but the Belgian pushed the ball after Haaland presented him standing (28th).

Favre replaced Giovanni Reyna with Jude Bellingham in the second half and made his team a bit more offensive in theory. However, a typical BVB game played out behind against a deep opponent. The Dortmund team was visually superior, a nice combination without developing penetrating power in the third attack. The Romans relied on the counterattack and were closer to the third hit than the BVB to the first.

But Dortmund have Haaland, who also need few scoring opportunities in the Champions League. The Romans were outnumbered on defense and yet a simple cross pass from Reyna was enough to allow Haaland to complete freely from 13 meters. However, the hope lasted only five minutes. On a counterattack, Immobile was sent to the baseline, Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro found his pass back and the Ivorian substitute fired from close range.
