The authorities were unaware of the alleged perpetrators as a threat

“The alleged assailant shot by the police had a residence permit in France, issued on March 4,” said the prosecutor. “The man was Chechen, born in Russia and had refugee status. The authorities did not recognize him as a threat,” he continues. This confirms previous media reports.

At the crime scene, in front of the Conflans Sainte-Honorie school, several hundred people spontaneously gathered in the afternoon, stunned by the brutal murder. “When we found out, we were deeply affected. We never would have thought something like this could happen,” a former university student told BFMTV television. Although the victim had never informed her, she felt a great need to express her grief and fly the flag. “We have to accept the different opinions in our society. Cartoons are a form of expression and free opinion is a valuable asset,” he says.

Expressions of solidarity throughout France

Despite strict crown rules, spontaneous solidarity rallies and marches were held throughout France. A large meeting for freedom of expression and in memory of the victim will take place in Paris on Sunday. The editors of the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” had asked for this.
